National biography award

The National Biography Award was established in 1996 to encourage the highest standards of biographical and autobiographical writing, and to promote public interest in these genres. Details.

New South Wales Premier's Awards

The primary non-fiction award is the Douglas Stewart Award. Details.

New South Wales Premier's History Awards

The awards assist in establishing values and standards in historical research and publication and encourage everyone to appreciate and learn from the work of our historians. Details.

  • Australian History Prize: For a major work of non-fiction, published in book or ebook form, on Australian history.

  • New South Wales Community and Regional History Prize: for a major work of non-fiction that makes a significant contribution to the understanding of community, institutional, urban or regional history in New South Wales.

  • General History Prize: for a major work of non-fiction on international history that is of national or international significance.

Victorian Premier’s Literary Awards

The awards suite consists of five annual categories: Fiction, Non-Fiction, Drama, Poetry, and Writing for Young Adults, each with a prize of $25,000. The winners of each of these five award categories will also be in the running for the major prize, the 2016 Victorian Prize for Literature, for which the winner receives an additional $100,000. This is the single most valuable literary award in the country. Details

Queensland Literary Awards

The Queensland Literary Awards celebrate and promote outstanding Australian writers. The State Library of Queensland manages the awards in collaboration with sponsors, industry partners and the writing community. Details.

South Australian Literary Awards

These literary awards, introduced in 1986 by the Government of South Australia, celebrate Australia’s writing culture by offering national and state-based literary prizes across a range of genres. Details

Western Australia Premier's Book Awards

The awards support, develop and recognise excellence in Western Australian writing. The State Library of Western Australia manages the Premier's Book Awards on behalf of the Government of Western Australia. Details.

Tasmanian Premier's Literary Prize

The prizes are for Tasmanian writers only. Details.

National Trust Heritage Awards

The National Trust (NSW) Heritage Awards is an annual celebration of outstanding practice in the field of heritage. Applications for the 2025 National Trust Heritage Awards will open late 2024. Details.

Australian Book Industry Awards

The annual awards that for the 'best reads' of the year voted by the publishing and bookselling industry. All entries for the current year of awards (eg: 2024) must be published from the preceding calendar year (eg: 1 January 2023 – 31 December 2023). Details.

Stella Prize

This annual prize celebrates Australian women’s contribution to literature and is named after Stella Maria Sarah ‘Miles’ Franklin. Both nonfiction and fiction books by Australian women are eligible for entry. Details.

Magarey Medal for Biography

Awarded biennially to the female who has published the work judged to be the best biographical writing on an Australian subject. Details.
